INDIE super group Oasis produced one of the greatest rock shows that Coventry has ever seen last night.

Almost 40,000 people packed into the Ricoh Arena to see the Manchester act - along with Cov Kids The Enemy.

And neither act disappointed - despite the miserable weather which soaked the majority of the crowd before the music had even begun.

Opening up with the classic Rock 'n' Roll star, singer Liam Gallagher prowled the stage with menacing intent early on, pacing in front of the fever-pitch crowd like a caged animal.

He wasted no time in introducing himself to the crowd in his own - and somewhat unorthodox - style.

"I can see some people with their hands up, clapping," Gallagher announced to the crowd, "Get your hands down. This is Oasis - not f***ing Simple Minds."

But he went further. Moments later Liam said: "I'd like to dedicate this next track to the real Sky Blues. MCFC."

Oh dear. That certainly got a response. A cascade of boos greeted his words quickly followed out by deafening choruses of "Who are ya?".

Despite being an Evertonian, I was tempted to throw my tickets away. But I didn't. Adopted city loyalty only runs so deep after all.

Of course, they are mighty Oasis - and promptly delivered a stunning rendition of Cigarettes and Alcohol to drown out any discord. Fantastic.

His brother Noel - as one may expect - opted for a different tack. He thanked the crowd for coming to see the band before dedicating a track - to himself.

"I'm going to dedicate this track to myself because I f***ing brilliant, I am," he smirked.

Fair enough. The band played a mixture of old and new material including the B-side The Masterplan and the Definitely Maybe classics like Supersonic and Live Forever.

Earlier in the night, The Enemy had proved their sound can be transferred onto the big stages with aplomb delivering a polished performance with Tom Clarke proving every bit the showman.

Armed with Coventry City FC shirts and flags, the Enemy certainly love a home-coming gig. Lads, we've missed you.

But the night really belonged to Oasis, who proved you really don't need giant mechanical elephants to put on a great show.

Although the people who wrote the wording on the giant screens may want to think about resitting their English GCSE again. Oh dear. Buses is not the hardest word to spell.

Noel dedicated B-side anthem Half the World Away to Tom Clarke and the boys - the opening lines "I would like to leave this city, this whole town don't smell too pretty" providing a cheeky pop at the Enemy's home town.

Rounding off the evening with the likes of Back in Anger, Champagne Supernova and I am the Walrus, it truly was a special evening.

And, after the final chords, Liam swaggered off without a second glance while Noel stayed behind, after the remainder of the band had departed, to clap the crowd.
